History

Rosca Vareira (sweet donut) is one of the traditional products of the locality of Ovar, present in various festivals and pilgrimages. It is traditionally made during festive seasons, particularly at Christmas. In keeping with tradition, sharing knowledge and flavors I decided to produce a sweet donut, lightly stuffed and covered with a festive touch. The origin of the name "Rodilha D’Ovar" is a tribute to all the women who used the rod to carry baskets with different purposes on their heads. The donuts made in Ovar were present at all the fairs and festivals in the region, carried in baskets on their heads, resting on a rod, by saleswomen who earned a day. The canasta rod on the head, resting on a rod, touting the fish bought at the auction or on the pier, is an iconographic image of the Ovar area. One can also remember the chicken coops in Ovar, which collected birds or animals in a bulging canasta with an upper frame covered with wire mesh, forming a small itinerant cage carried on its head, which rested on a trough. In the past, as there was no running water, women went to the fountain or the fountain with their pitchers and jugs, and there was no lack of a cork. As he was also company with the washerwomen of the Luzes River, the women who went to the wood to the pine forest, the farmers who carried the gourds on their heads, the milkwomen from Ribeira, or even the ladies who carried the musicians' instruments when the Bands went to perform at the parties that took place nearby. In this way, I consider that the use of the rod was an integral part of the life of these simple and fighter people - our good vareiro people.
